How Giving Notice of Marriage Works

Giving notice is a legal requirement before you can marry in the UK. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is Giving Notice?

Giving notice is the legal process of informing your local register office that you intend to marry. Both partners must attend their local register office in person unless subjected to immigration control — you cannot do this online or by post. You must give notice at least 28 days before your ceremony date.

Which Register Office Do You Go To?

You must give notice at the register office in the district where you live — not where your ceremony is taking place. If you and your partner live in different districts you must each go to your own local register office. This is one of the most common mistakes couples make.

What Documents Do You Need?

The documents required depend on your nationality, immigration status, and whether either of you has been married before. At minimum you will need proof of identity, proof of nationality, and proof of address. Additional documents may be required depending on your situation.

How Far in Advance Do You Need to Book?

You must give notice at least 28 days before your ceremony. However register offices can get booked up quickly — especially in London. We recommend booking your notice appointment as early as possible, ideally 2 to 3 months before your ceremony date.

What Happens if Something Goes Wrong?

If your documents are rejected or there is an issue at the register office, your wedding date could be at risk. Common issues include incorrect documents, expired ID, or attending the wrong register office. This is exactly why we exist — to make sure this never happens to you.
